This year our annual industry day, which is part of our Enterprise Education Programme targeting S3 pupils, took the form of a Stock Market Challenge.
Using the Trading Floor game, our pupils were able to apply their learning in a sector context, with the help and advice of a local employer who gave structure and context to the activity.
The day was organised by our EIL Group, which consists of members of staff from most departments in the school. Our school was one of the first in Scotland to invest in this innovative and highly successful interactive, computerised learning game, which is geared to stimulating productive group activities, while at the same time promoting financial and enterprise awareness.
The pupils were divided into twenty groups, each led by local representatives from business, commerce and the professions. Working with these mentors, they were given the task of using their skills in English, Maths and practical problem solving, to trade effectively on the stock market, over a period of five “days”.
Each “day” lasted approximately 25 minutes and at the end of the five “days”, the team with the greatest amount of share capital and bonds, was pronounced the winner. Senior pupils played a key role as floor traders selling stocks and shares.
The feedback from both the pupils and their mentors has been extremely positive. There was evidence of genuine corporate effort, with each group member playing to his or her strengths and becoming totally engaged in the activity. All those who so kindly agreed to support our pupils through giving so generously of their time and expertise, in their role as mentors, commented on the fact that there was “a real buzz” in the assembly hall and that the pupils participated with real enthusiasm and commitment.
Mrs Fiona Gordon, our business partner from Redmayne Bentley, made an invaluable contribution to the success of the event. It was a most successful day, which was enjoyed by all who participated.

“Trading Floor taught us that you have to work well in a team and commit to your particular job in order for the whole team to benefit. It also helped me to develop skills which would be essential for a job in this area, such as quick thinking and decision making.”
