Finance Lab

Finance Lab is an online multimedia simulation that transforms trading on the financial markets into an accessible and enjoyable collaborative learning experience.  It enables students to develop essential mathematical techniques and applications, apply their business and economic understanding, and develop their key skills in a collaborative and time-pressured team game.

In the game students work in pairs on two linked screens: one for the Investment Analyst and one for the Media Analyst. Their objective is to increase the value of their team's starting fund by investing in 12 multi-national companies and 3 commodities.

Finance Lab is meaningful and engaging for students, enabling them to demonstrate their understandings, skills and attitudes. It requires the use of high-level thinking skills as players navigate their way through the game.

Students must collaborate to make decisions to deal with the consequences of investments and manage risk within their trading positions, all of which allows them to be absorbed in their own learning and makes for a truly effective learning experience. 

The assessment process will help tutors to gauge how well students have set out their strategic goals and give them observable and demonstrable evidence to suggest learning has taken place.
